YOUTH SANCTUARY
RENAÎTRE
(Reborn)
In it is eighteen parts, the picture series “Renaître” seems to connect religious references and medieval stylistic devices with some current contemporary elements. In addition to Romanesque features such as the renunciation of spatial depth, fixed outlines, or the symbolic function of color and proportion, the strongly eroticized images and symbols are also striking. It rains knights from heaven. A stimulated vulva causes a volcanic eruption and a suckling pig turns contently in its own juice. In any case, there are many possibilities for interpretation
and speculation.
The term “Renaître” (French for resurrect, reborn, or re-emerge) is interpreted visually. At the same time, reference is made to the way of working. On the reappearance (breakthrough) of color, the citing of styles and symbols. Through a special treatment of the canvas and the different applications with sprayed paint and brushes, the painted scenes appear partly shadowy, almost archaic, fresco-like, as if they are reappearing from the past. The frescoes of a „Piero della Francesca“
do not seem to be the inspiration, its more the medieval wall paintings of local churches or the imagery and comic-like narrative style of the“Bayeux Tapestry”. Parallels to his own work, such as the drawin series “Book of Demons” or the “Wall Simulations” come to mind.
Also, several ceramic works, have references to the „Renaître“ series.
Apocalyptic scenes refer to grievances in institutions, such as church and police, elsewhere there are hints of one criticism of politics and the capitalist system. Falling birds symbolize burning issues such as environmental and climate change. Sexual allusions pointing in all directions question morality but always point to the possibility of new beginning. Love, desire - hope?
Started at the end of 2019, this dystopian series of images with its apparent antiquity gives a glimpse of the multitude of „old“ problems that are suddenly very real again. Their cause and the current reactio of society to sexuality, pandemics, and war, are nothing new.
On the contrary, as “Renaître - Reborn” also means: “Everything has been here before!”. With diverse, subtle, visual, like thematic quotations, a cycle is brought to mind here and so our belief in a progressive society is questioned. Without referring to a clear position.
We should look and think through the sketched stories of the pictures.
These stories make the picture. The painter only provides the impetus.
Just a kick-off for our minds.
